Need More Gogol?

September 18th is our kick off event for the One Book, One Watertown program, with Professor Bakirathi Mani traveling up from Swarthmore College to give a talk and lead a discussion on The Namesake.

Taking that into consideration, I’m just going to assume that you’ve already read the book, and you can’t wait for more, ok? As you know, the book’s protagonist is named after the Russian author, Nikolai Gogol. And the book begins and end with a character reading Gogol’s short story, The Overcoat.

So why not read The Overcoat yourself? Not only is an amazing story (though I hear it’s better in the original Russian), but it may also help you sound smarter at the book discussion.

You can read it online, under its alternate title The Cloak, or in print from an anthology in our collection called The Art of the Short Story. Happy reading!
