Literary Lincoln

I had a whole theme picked out for a tag mash about mornings, and coffee, but it turns out that the majority of LibraryThing users who tagged books with “morning” were reading those books to their kids. (The suggested related tag mash: bedtime!)

While I was looking up some tag mash alternatives, a patron came up and asked me for “the recent book about Lincoln” – a question I’ve been getting quite often lately. There are several new books about the President who helped inspire our current President, all worth checking out, even if you’re a reluctant non-fiction reader. Lincoln’s speech writing especially should wow you like the best literary novel.

Here are a few of the new books about our 16th President:

Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin – (This came out in 2006, but it has enjoyed a recent upsurge inpopularity when President Obama expressed his desire to hire a Team of Rivals-inspired Cabinet.)

Lincoln: The Biography of a Writer by Fred Kaplan

Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief by James M. McPherson

Looking for Lincoln: The Making of an American Icon by Philip B. Kunhardt III, Peter W. Kunhardt, and Peter W. Kunhardt Jr.

A. Lincoln: A Biography by Ronald C. White Jr.

Abraham Lincoln: A Presidential Life by James M. McPherson

I thought about searching LibraryThing for a tag mash about mornings, coffee, and Lincoln, but sometimes you have to admit defeat when it’s staring you in the face.
